Why Do You Need to Change Elevators on the Second Floor?

Many visitors are surprised to learn that reaching the Eiffel Tower summit requires changing elevators on the second floor. This is not a ticket issue or a mistake. The tower uses different elevator systems for the lower and upper sections due to its unique structure and engineering design.

If your ticket includes summit access, you will first take the elevator from the ground floor to the second floor. Once there, you will follow the signs to the summit elevators and continue to the top. Visitors with second-floor tickets simply end their visit on the second floor and do not continue higher.

For first-time visitors, understanding this process before arrival can make the experience much smoother and avoid unnecessary confusion.

When you reach the second floor, you will join a completely separate queue for the summit elevators. Keep in mind that your ticket time is your entry time into the monument, not the exact time you reach the summit. Factor this extra waiting time into your schedule.

Second Floor Tickets allow access to the first and second floors only. Summit Floor Tickets include access to the first floor, second floor, and the summit.

The second floor already offers some of the best panoramic views of Paris. However, visitors who want to reach the highest accessible point of the tower must choose summit access when booking.

This distinction is one of the most important things to understand before purchasing tickets.

What Happens If the Summit Closes During Your Visit?

The summit can occasionally close due to strong winds, severe weather conditions, technical maintenance, or operational reasons. These closures are decided by the Eiffel Tower management and can happen even when the rest of the monument remains open.

If you hold a summit ticket and the summit becomes unavailable, visitors are usually still allowed to access the second floor. Depending on the circumstances, compensation policies may vary.

Although summit closures are relatively uncommon, they are more likely during periods of strong wind or unexpected technical issues.
